DOT inspection requirements in Wyoming

The Wyoming Highway Patrol and WYDOT enforce truck and bus safety. Wyoming adopts federal rules, covering ordinary intrastate vehicles at 26,001 lb, plus passenger and placarded hazmat triggers. There's no FMCSA-recognized state program, so a qualified inspector's federal annual is the standard. Tow trucks and school buses have separate inspections.

Who regulates commercial vehicles in Wyoming?

The Wyoming Highway Patrol enforces commercial carrier safety, with sworn officers and civilian inspectors at ports of entry and on the road. WYDOT sets the motor carrier rules and issues operating authority (WYDOT motor carrier rules).

Does Wyoming follow federal rules, and what are the intrastate thresholds?

Yes. Wyoming adopts Part 396 for interstate and intrastate carriers, with Wyoming-specific intrastate changes (WYDOT rules, chapter 1, section 15). Ordinary intrastate vehicles are covered at 26,001 lb or more; passenger carriers, placarded hazmat at any weight and some other commercial classes are also covered (W.S. 31-18-101).

What annual or periodic inspections does Wyoming require?

The federal annual, at least every 12 months, for every covered truck, tractor, trailer, converter dolly and bus. Wyoming isn't an FMCSA-recognized equivalent inspection state, so there's no state program that replaces it.

Who can perform the inspection, and is a technology-based inspection accepted?

The federal annual can be done by an inspector qualified under 49 CFR 396.19: a qualified carrier employee, or a commercial garage, fleet facility, truck stop or similar business. That's Bright Inspect's model, designed to meet FMCSA annual inspection requirements.

Tow and recovery inspections are done by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, so our federal annual is not a substitute for them. For school buses, at least one of the two yearly inspections must be done by someone not employed by the school district; whether a technology-based inspection qualifies is still being confirmed, so ask us first.

What records and stickers does Wyoming require?

Keep the annual report 14 months where the vehicle is housed or maintained, with proof on the vehicle, and keep inspector qualification records while they inspect and for 1 year after. Wyoming has no general annual sticker. Tow trucks carry a copy of their inspection report, and school districts keep copies of school bus inspection reports.

What happens if your inspection is expired at a roadside stop in Wyoming?

Commercial vehicles may be directed to stop at Wyoming ports of entry or other locations for inspection by certified Highway Patrol inspectors (W.S. 31-18-301; Wyoming commercial vehicle safety plan). Federal rules let an officer cite you under 49 CFR 396.17(c) when proof of a current annual inspection isn't on the vehicle; it carries a CSA severity weight of 4. The officer gives the driver an inspection report. The carrier must certify that listed violations were corrected and return it within 15 days, and keep a copy for 12 months (49 CFR 396.9). Fines are set by state law. A roadside inspection doesn't replace the annual.

We're still confirming roadside fines for a missing annual inspection in Wyoming. Check with the Wyoming Department of Transportation directly.

Nobody can promise to remove a violation or change a safety score; what fixes the problem going forward is a current inspection and a complete record.

Wyoming DOT inspection FAQs

You don't need a station. Wyoming uses the federal annual model, so a qualified inspector can inspect your truck anywhere. Bright Inspect does it where your truck is parked.

Partly. The T/R-4 tow inspection form recognizes a CVSA decal from the previous 90 days for its Level I or V component, but the tow equipment check still applies, and a CVSA decal is not your federal annual.

At least twice each school year, with at least one inspection by someone not employed by the school district.

Yes, for trucks, trailers and buses under the federal annual model Wyoming uses. Not for the WYDOT tow and recovery inspection.
