What does a DOT annual inspection check?

The minimum checklist is Appendix A to 49 CFR Part 396. It covers brakes, coupling devices, exhaust, fuel system, lighting, safe loading, steering, suspension, frame, tires, wheels and rims, windshield glazing and windshield wipers, plus bus-specific items. Each must pass; one failed component means the vehicle doesn't pass.

How do I prepare for a DOT annual inspection?

  1. 01

    Pull your last report.

Look at what was repaired or noted last time and confirm it is still in good shape.

  2. 02

Walk the vehicle with the table above.

Lights, tires, wipers and the windshield are easy to check yourself before the inspector does.

  3. 03

    Fix known defects first.

Repairing what you already know about saves a failed result and a re-check.

  4. 04

    Have the vehicle ID ready.

The report needs to identify the vehicle, so have the unit number and VIN at hand.

  5. 05

Use a printable form if you inspect yourself.

Our free DOT annual inspection form follows Appendix A and the 396.21 report fields.

Is the annual checklist the same as a driver's pre-trip?

No. A driver's pre-trip or post-trip inspection report (DVIR) is a daily check and does not count as the annual inspection. The annual must cover every Appendix A item and be done by a qualified inspector. Who can inspect.

Frequently asked questions

Appendix A sets what must be checked, and 49 CFR 396.21 sets what the report must include. FMCSA publishes a sample report for new entrants. You can also use our free form.

It covers the inspection requirement for 12 months, but the vehicle must still meet Appendix A standards every day it runs (396.17(g)). Defects found at roadside are judged on the day of the stop.

You get a written list of the failed items. Fix them and Bright Inspect re-checks only those items, free, within 72 hours. After 72 hours, a full new inspection is needed.
