What is a virtual DOT inspection?

A virtual DOT inspection uses live, recorded video to let a qualified inspector direct and verify the annual inspection checklist while the vehicle stays where it's parked. Federal rules don't use the word "virtual"; what matters is that a qualified inspector checks every Appendix A component and produces a compliant report.

How does a Bright Inspect virtual inspection work?

  1. 01

    Book.

Pick a time that fits your load schedule. Tell us the vehicle, the state it's registered in and where it's parked.

  2. 02

    Inspect.

An inspector experienced with your vehicle type and qualified under 49 CFR 396.19 runs a live, recorded inspection of every component in Appendix A to Part 396.

  3. 03

    Get your record.

Download it, add it to your cab, and share it with brokers, insurers, airports or school districts. Each record has a verification code anyone can check at book.dotbrightinspect.com/verify.

Is it the same as FMCSA's remote investigations?

No. Those are FMCSA compliance investigations of a carrier's records. In 2026, FMCSA moved to restore in-person presence for onsite carrier investigations, per FreightWaves reporting. That change concerns federal investigators, not a carrier's annual vehicle inspection.

When doesn't a virtual inspection fit?

When your state requires its own program for your vehicle, or when a permit or contract requires an in-person or state-licensed inspector. We check both before you book. States with their own programs.
