Does each trailer need its own DOT annual inspection?

Yes. 49 CFR 396.17(a) defines each vehicle in a combination as a commercial motor vehicle. For a tractor, semitrailer and full trailer, the tractor, the semitrailer and the full trailer, including the converter dolly if equipped, must each be inspected, with proof on each unit.

What does the trailer rule mean for you?

  1. 01

    List every unit.

Write down each power unit, trailer and converter dolly you operate.

  2. 02

    Inspect each one.

Each unit gets its own inspection and its own report.

  3. 03

    Put proof on each unit.

Each trailer carries its own report or sticker, not the tractor's. Sticker rules.

  4. 04

    Track each date.

Trailers inspected on different days expire on different days. How long it's good for.

  5. 05

    Keep each report 14 months.

File reports by unit so you can produce them on demand. Record rules.
